Collection of flowers and banana fruit
A banana plant propagated from a sucker will begin to bloom about 10 months after planting. The inflorescence develops into tiered fruit called a bunch. The female flowers grow in groups of 10–20 along the axis of the inflorescence and are covered by purplish bracts to produce a conical structure. As the inflorescence develops, the bracts are shed, revealing the clusters (hands) of fruit beneath.
Harvesting
For domestic consumption, bananas are harvested when fully formed but still green. The complete bunch is cut from the plant. This can be hung up to ripen to yellow naturally in a cool shady spot. Ripening usually takes 3–7 days. Alternatively, the green fruit may be cooked or processed.
