Yield, quality of producing
Yield will vary depending on the type of tea, density of planting, location and the different maintenance regimes practised. A new tea tree plantation in China could produce 1500–1600 kg/ha/year (dried tea), but in Lao PDR an average yield of only about 100–300 kg/ha/year is typical (4.5–5 kg of fresh tea leaves produces 1 kg dried tea). In general, with good cultivation practices a new tea tree plantation will start to produce after 3–4 years and yields will increase year on year. At 7–15 years old, tea trees produce maximum yields. An ancient tea tree plantation may only produce 50–200 kg/ha/year.
