Botanical Description

Tree to 20 m tall and 0.5 m dbh with a broad, irregular crown. Leafy branchlets ascending or suberect, broadly rectangular, axis green in 1st year. Leaves shortly petiolate, dark green adaxially, lanceolate, falcate, acuminate, 5–10 cm long, 0.8–1.2 cm wide, leathery, stomatal bands white, 1–2 mm wide, narrower than marginal bands. Pollen cones terminal, clustering 2–5 together, 2–5 cm long with 8–14 subsessile ovoid strobiles 3 mm in diameter; microsporophylls 6–8, peltate, each with 2–4 pollen sacs. Seed-bearing structures axillary, pedunculate, solitary, ovoid. Aril juicy, brightly red, glaucous. Seeds ellipsoid, 1.2–1.6 cm long, 5–7 mm in diameter. Pollination March–April, seeds February–March (Averyanov et al. 2014)

Description of Use

Medicinal: Recent investigations have been undertaken to analyze the plant's (leaves and stems) potential for anti-cancer drugs similar to those found in Taxus.
Other Uses: The seeds have a high oil content. No uses are given for this oil. The wood is used for tool making, furniture, and woodturning (handicrafts). (Hoang et al. 2004).
