Fruiting body spoon sharp, up to 20 cm tall. Cap 2−15 cm wide, mesopodal and often excentric, or often pleuropodal, varying thin and flexible to thick and rigid, more or less sulcate and rugose, generally dull and matt, rich dark brown then fuscous brown to black, old specimens dull black (even the margin), weathering fuscous with pale grey zones, young specimens in full growth with a chestnut−brown sublaccate or resinous zone round the white margin, obtuse to subacute. Medicinal: Chinese to reduce inflammation, to treat diuretic and upset stomach, and to prevent cancer. (Chan et al. 2015), Nutritional analysis of freeze−dried mycelia of A. rugosum (KUM 61131) from submerged culture indicated a predominant presence of carbohydrates, proteins, dietary fibre, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium.
