Botanical Description

This species is found in average cluster diameters of about 1 -1.5 m with an average height of 13 m. Canes are around 4-6 cm diameter, with a wall thickness of 1.3-1.5 cm, and internodes of 25-30 cm. The first branch is 2 cm above the ground. Clump sheets are usually 12 x 25 cm, pale yellow, with scattered hair on the back and a clean shiny appearance on the vein. The tip clump sheet is erect, measuring 3 x 14 cm with two small auricles. Leaflets grow in groups of eight to twelve, sized 1.2 x 11-12 cm. The cluster is quite dense with straight stems and drooping tips. In January 2007 in Luang Prabang district, stands of Mai Sang Phai were fruiting, resulting in whole populations to die. Last time this happened here was c. 30 years ago.

Description of Use

Clump sheets used to be harvested for hat making. Harvest happens all year for clump aged two to three years and older. Shoots are edible and are harvested from July to September. Clump are used domestically for scaffolding or sold on local markets at $0.5 per cane (Vientiane). Shoots sell at $0.3 per kg (Vientiane). Sandy soil is most appropriate for Mai Sang Phai, a typical domesticated bamboo in Laos, grown in home gardens as a fence after being propagated by stumps or clump cuttings.
