Botanical Description

Mai Bong is a densely tufted bamboo, with clusters of 30-40 clump. Clumps are 5-15 m tall, 5-7 cm in diameter, with internodes at about 30-50 cm. Walls are thick and pale green, though covered with white wax when young. Several branches grow from lower nodes, with small green spikes. Leaflets are 21-30 x 2-3.5 cm. Shoots are mainly used domestically, but some fresh shoots are sold to Vietnam from Sepon district in Savannakhet province, for $0.1 per kg. In its original habitat along streams in upland/sloping land at altitudes of 150-1,500 m - it is suitable for erosion prevention. It is commonly found in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar on granite bedrock.

Description of Use

A very popular species in Laos for its shoots, collected May-July, but also for its canes as these are very flexible and durable, used for baskets and scaffolding.
