Botanical Description

Rhizomatous herb. Leafy shoots up to 1 m tall, with 10-25 leaflets. Leaves blades oblong, 16-19 x 3-4 cm, apex acuminate, base attenuate, margin entire. Ligules bilobed, linear, 3 cm long. Inflorescences arising from the rhizome, spike head-like, 4 cm as wide and long. Peduncles are 1-5 cm long. Flowers yellowish to white. Bracts are lanceolate, 3 cm long, apex 9 mm, apex acute. Bracteoles are elliptic. Calyx tubes are 1.2 cm long, apex split one. Floral tubes are 2-3 cm long, corolla lobes are oblong-lanceolate, 2.4 cm long. The labellum is yellowish to white, elliptic-orbiculate, 3 cm long. Lateral staminodes are sessile. Anthers crest yellow 1 cm long. Ovaries less than 5 mm. Fruits dehiscent. 

Description of Use

The rhizome is used as a laxative and fortreatment of stomach ailments. The young inflorescences are eaten as a vegetable.
