Value Chain
Producers: Villagers harvest fresh green tea leaves for their own consumption. Some villagers transport leaves to a processing plant near their home village. Tea is harvested from wild forest tea trees, cultivated forest (“ancient”) tea plantations or commercial-scale plantations.
Sellers: Villagers or processors sell their tea product direct to customers, including tourists. Processors commonly export tea to markets in Vientiane and export to China, Malaysia and international markets.
Buyers: Processors buy fresh leaves from villagers to produce tea. Tourists buy locally grown tea from villages as souvenirs.
Prices and trends: For fresh leaf tea, the price is 5000–15,000 kip/kg. High-quality tea can fetch about 45,000-50,000 kip/kg. Villagers sell to middle-men at 40,000–150,000 kip/kg of dry leaves. Wholesalers and processors export to international markets for about 250,000 kip/kg.
