Botanical Description

Rhizomatous herb, leafy 1.2-2 m. Leaves 1o-27, blade elliptic, oblong-lanceolate, 18-25 x 3-6 cm, apex acuminate, base attenuate, margin entire. Petiole less than 5 mm, glabrous. Inflorescences arising from rhizomes, spike elliptic, 8-10 x 2-4 cm. Peduncle ascending to procumbent 6-15 cm long. Flower yellow with Spotted pattern red-brown. Bracts orange-red, oblong-ovate, 1.9-2.6 cm, 3-5 x 2-4 cm. Bractiole oblong-lanceolate, 2-2.6 cm long. Calyx tube 1-2 cm long, apex splite one side. Corolla tube 3-4 cm long, corolla lobes broadly ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 2-2.5 cm long. Labellum yellow with spotted pattern, broadly ovate 1.2-1.7 cm, apex emargine to bilobes, lateral staminodes oblanceolate. Anther crest 1-1.5 cm long. Ovary 4 mm. Fruits dehiscent. 

Description of Use

Young inflorescences are eaten as a vegetable. This species is occasionallysold in vegetable markets in Vientiane, although according to the vendors, the speciesis brought from Houaphan and Phoukhaoukhouay (Vientiane province).
