Vietnamese: Thông tre lá ngắn.
Tree to 10 m tall and 0.5 m dbh with broad obconical crown. Bark pale brown, fibrous, shallowly fissured. Leaves shortly petiolate, coriaceous, glossy green, young ones pinkish, glaucous, crowded at apex of branchlets, broadly lanceolate to elliptic, mucronate, 2–4 cm long, 5–10 mm wide. Pollen strobiles, subsessile, solitary, axillary, cylindric, 1.5–3.0 cm long, 3–4 mm in diametr. Seed-bearing structures solitary, axillary, peduncle 4–10 mm long, receptacle red, obconical, 5–12 mm long, 3–6 mm in diameter. Seeds glaucous, ovoid, 8 mm long. Pollination in March–May, seeds October–November
The wood is used for making furniture, utensils, carts, and farm implements.
This species is one of several that can be traded collectively under the name 'podo'. The general description of podo wood is as follows:
- The heartwood is light yellow with a greenish tinge or light golden brown; it is not clearly demarcated from the sapwood. The texture is very fine and even; the grain is straight. The wood can vary considerably in hardness and density; it is fairly strong; non-durable under exposed conditions. It seasons well without serious degradation. It is easy to work with hand and machine tools; planned surfaces are smooth and lustrous. The wood is suitable for many decorative purposes, interior finishings, panelling, high-class furniture and cabinets, fancy plywood and flooring.
