The average cluster diameter of Mai Bo is about 1 m and it grows to an average height of 10-12 m. Canes have diameters of around 4-5 cm, a wall thickness of c.0.6 cm, and 25-30 cm long internodes with dark green stems. Branches have air roots and the first branch is 1.5 m from the ground. Clump sheets are 15 x 24 cm, pale yellow and hairy from the middle upwards. The clump sheet tip - not hairy and not drooping measures about 1.2 x 9 cm. Leaflets are 5 x 30 cm in size and grow in groups of 14-16. Mai Noh Bo is found in open clusters of 20-30 stems.
The species is not well identified yet, but has been domesticated in Houaphan province and also transplanted in Vientiane Capital for its edible shoots, which have a moderately sweet taste and a good smell. Harvesting is from July to October and grilled shoots can be kept for a month. Clump are not suitable for handicraft making or house construction as they are fragile and prone to insect attack.
