Wai boun is an abundantly clustering rattan with cirrus, and stems up to 25 m long and 1.5 cm-3 cm in diameter. The green sheath has a diameter of 3 cm-6 cm and is often covered with reddish-black indumentums. Its many spines are black, and its ocrea tiny and dry, with no spines or bristles. The leaves are 1 m-2.5 m long and have a cirrus of 0.5 m-2 m. The leaflets are regular and the leafstalk 10 cm-50 cm long. The 0.3 m-0.65 m long inflorescence is erect with no flagellum. Its stalk is less than 5 cm long and there is a boat-shaped leaf-like part protecting the inflorescence. The fruit measures 1.9 cm x 1.9 cm, is scaly, grooved and light in colour.
Its shoots are a popular food in northern Laos, sold for $0.05-$0.2 each or $0.2 per kg. One person is able to collect 6 kg of shoots per collection trip, earning $35 per year. One kg of seed sells for $0.5-$1 and is exported to China to be made into necklaces or as an ingredient of traditional medicine.
