Rotang rudentum (Lour.) Baill.
Vietnamese: songda
A clustering species with stems up to 30 m long and 2.5 cm-3.5 cm in diameter.
Its sheaths are 4 cm-7 cm in diameter, and light or yellowish-green. Wai tabong has many pale straw-coloured spines with dark tips and a tiny ocrea. The leaves are 1.8 m-3.8 m long, with regular leaflets and a 20 cm-60 cm long petiole. The 3.5 m-6.5 m inflorescences sport a flagellum and pendulous branches. The fruit, sized 1.8 cm x 1.2 cm, is scaly and grooved, yellow when ripe with thin dark edges. The seed is not ruminate.
The shoots are a common food with half the Lao species tasting sweet and the others a little bitter. The unripe fruits of some rattan species are also edible, giving a sweet and sour taste.
