Botanical Description

Rhizomatous herb, pseudostems up to 1.4 m tall. Leaves 10-25; leaf sheath 2-9 cm long; ligule entire, 7-12 mm, membranous; leaf blade linear-lanceolate, 10-25 × 3-6 cm, glabrescent, base attenuate, apex caudate. Inflorescences arising from rhizomes, fusiform, 7-15 × 2-5 cm; peduncle 20-35 cm; bracts green-purple to red when fruiting, ovate, 3-4 × 1.5-2.5 cm, margin membranous, apex obtuse-acuminate, green to red near the apex. Calyx ca 9 cm, pubescent. Corolla tube 3-3.5 cm; lobes with a brown stripe, lanceolate, ca 2 cm. Labellum orbiculate, yellowish with a brown stripe, ca 3 cm. Lateral staminode ovate, apex rounded. Anther sessile, ca 1 cm; connective appendage incurved, ca. 10 mm. Ovary hirsute. seed elliptic, black-brown. 

Description of Use

Young shoots and young inflorescences are used for food.
